20 Apr Anna Maria – A Breath of Fresh Air
Anna Maria is a truly unique and beautiful vacation spot.
A Look Back
Anna Maria Island is a barrier island located on the Gulf of Mexico in Florida. Its history dates back to the 1500s when the island was originally inhabited by the Timucuan and Calusa Indian tribes. Europeans first arrived on the island in the 16th century and Spanish explorers named it “Island of Santa Maria.”
In the early 1900s, the first settlers arrived on the island, and they started to farm, fish, and trade with the mainland. The arrival of the Tampa and Gulf Coast Railroad in 1902 greatly expanded the island’s economic opportunities as it enabled the shipment of crops and seafood to other parts of the state. In the 1920s and 1930s, the island became a popular tourist destination, and the construction of the first hotel, the Anna Maria Beach Inn, in 1922 further increased tourism. The island’s popularity continued to grow, and in 1957, it was incorporated as a city.
And Now
Today, Anna Maria Island remains a popular vacation spot, known for its white sand beaches, clear blue waters, and old-fashioned charm. The island has preserved much of its history, with many of the original buildings and landmarks still standing, and visitors can experience the island’s past through a variety of museums and historical sites. The island is home to several local shops, restaurants, and art galleries. Visitors also enjoy outdoor activities like boating, fishing, and kayaking in the Gulf of Mexico or Sarasota Bay. The island hosts several festivals throughout the year, such as the Sandbar Restaurant’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display and the annual Beach-N-Bay bike tour. Additionally, the island’s relaxed pace of life and family-friendly environment make it a popular destination for families and couples alike.
